The Polar Express has become a classic Christmas picture book written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg the same person responsible for stories such as Jumanji and Zathura. Since its release in 1985, it’s been praised by critics and casual book readers and it even got adapted into a movie in 2004. Let’s take a look at what made this story such a timeless Christmas tale.

A little boy is awakened by the sounds of hissing and whistling coming from outside his window. He looks outside to find a steam engine that is magically parked in his driveway. When the boy goes to inspect he discovers a conductor waiting outside the train and welcomes him to take a journey to the north pole to see Santa on The Polar Express. On the train, he sees other kids in their pajamas. They all get served hot chocolate and sing carols while the train makes it’s way to the north pole.

The story is short and simple with beautifully illustrated pictures and a message that is still as relevant today as it was back then. The idea of a kid getting on a magical train leading to the north pole is a wonderful experience. You almost feel like your one of the passengers on the Polar Express and witnessing the events that happen in the story. It’s also the perfect Christmas read as the story engulfs itself in the Christmas spirit and holiday cheer.

This is an absolute read for fans of Christmas tales and children’s book authors. It’s a great example of making a story that is interesting to kids while simultaneously playing on adult’s nostalgia for the good old days of Christmas past. It’s another great book from Chris Van Allsburg and a fantastic tale to add to the other festive favorites.
